The wording on a wedding invitation carries a lot of weight — it announces the families, honours the elders and tells guests exactly where and when to arrive. In Tamil Nadu, most families print their invitation in Tamil, English, or both. Below you will find ready-to-use wording samples in Tamil and English for Hindu, Christian and Muslim weddings, a checklist of details to include, and a timeline for ordering your cards.

What to include on a wedding invitation

• An opening blessing or invocation (family deity, "By the grace of God", or Bismillah)
• Full names of the bride and groom, with qualifications if your family prefers
• Names of both sets of parents — and grandparents, if you wish to honour them
• Date in both the Tamil calendar and the English calendar
• Muhurtham time (for example, 9.00 am to 10.30 am)
• Full venue name and address, with a landmark
• Reception date, time and venue, if different
• An RSVP name and phone number
• Optional: a QR code linking to Google Maps directions

Tamil wedding invitation wording (Hindu)

This is a traditional format used by many Tamil Hindu families:

Tips for bilingual Tamil–English cards

• Put one language on each side, or Tamil on the inside and English on the outside. Mixing both languages in one paragraph is hard to read.
• Choose a clear Tamil font. Very decorative Tamil fonts can make names hard to read, especially for elderly guests. Keep the decorative font for the names only.
• Check the spelling of every name in both scripts with the family elders. Names are the most common mistake we are asked to fix after printing.
• Double-check the muhurtham time against what your priest or astrologer wrote down.
• Add a QR code for the venue location — it saves outstation guests many phone calls.

When to order your wedding cards

During peak wedding months such as Thai, Panguni, Vaikasi and Aavani, print schedules fill up quickly — order early to avoid a last-minute rush.

Should a wedding invitation be in Tamil or English?

Many Tamil families print both: Tamil for elders and relatives, and English for colleagues and friends from other states. A bilingual card, with one language on each side, covers everyone with a single print run.

Whose name comes first on the invitation?

Traditionally, the family hosting the wedding lists their child first. On cards printed by the groom's family, the groom's name usually comes first; on cards printed by the bride's family, the bride's name comes first. Many families print two versions.

How many wedding cards should I order?

Count one card per family or household, not per person, then add about 10% for last-minute additions and keepsakes.
